AUSTRALIANS are the most optimistic they have been about local employment in more than 10 years, a poll has found.
The latest quarterly Australian National University survey of public opinion, released today, asked respondents if the best days for employment were in the past or the future.
For the first time since the question was asked in 1998, more
respondents indicated the best times were ahead, rather than behind,
ANU poll leader Professor Ian McAllister said.
"This is an interesting and unexpected finding and suggests that in
spite of the economic recession, there remains considerable public
optimism about the resilience of the economy,'' Professor McAllister
said.
Forty-two per cent of respondents still cited the economy as the
most significant problem facing Australia, although this was a 10
percentage point decline from last quarter's results.
The environment and global warming were named by 10 per cent of
respondents as the biggest concern for the country - a decline of two
percentage points - followed by immigration and health care.
